Steam has no lookup that turns a display name into a SteamID. You search Steam Community for the name, open the matching profile, and read the ID from its URL. All methods are listed in our guide to finding your Steam ID. This page covers the case where you only have a name.

  1. Open the Steam Community user search and type the display name.
  2. Click the result whose avatar, level, and country match the person you look for.
  3. Copy the profile URL from the address bar. In the Steam client, right-click the profile page and choose Copy Page URL.
  4. If the URL looks like steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198012345678, the 17 digits are the SteamID64.
  5. If the URL looks like steamcommunity.com/id/somename, paste somename into the SteamID Resolver to get the SteamID64.

Why a display name does not give you a SteamID #

A display name is the profile name that other players see. Anyone can pick it, change it, and share it with thousands of other users. A SteamID64 is the permanent number of one account. Because of this, no tool can turn a display name into exactly one ID. A name only gives you a list of candidates.

Steam uses three different names for one account. The display name shows on the profile and in games, and it is not unique. The custom URL is the optional text after /id/ in the profile address, and it is unique. The account name is the sign-in name. Public profiles do not show it, so you cannot look anyone up with it.

How do I search for a Steam user by display name? #

Open steamcommunity.com/search/users, type the exact display name, and press Enter. Steam lists the matching profiles with their avatars. Click one to open it. The address bar of that profile holds either the ID or the custom URL, and you need one of the two.

If the list is long, compare the avatar, the profile level, the country, and the games the person plays. A private profile shows less, but its address still works. Our guide to finding a Steam ID on a private profile explains that case.

What do I do when the URL shows a name instead of numbers? #

A name after /id/ is a custom URL, not a SteamID. Paste that name into the SteamID Resolver and it returns the SteamID64 together with the SteamID, SteamID3, and hex formats. Developers can run the same lookup with the Steam Web API. See how to resolve a vanity URL with the Steam Web API.

What if many players use the same display name? #

Do not guess. Two accounts can share one display name, and the first search result is not always the right one. Ask the person for a profile link or a screenshot of the profile page, then read the ID from the URL. A link identifies one account. A name does not.

Example: a Rust server admin gets a report about a player called Nova. The search returns dozens of accounts with that name. The admin asks the reporter for the profile link, receives steamcommunity.com/id/nova_plays, and resolves nova_plays to a SteamID64. The ban goes on the ID, because anyone can copy a display name.

How can I confirm I found the right account? #

Ask the account owner to open Account details in Steam and read you the Steam ID, or to send the profile link. If it matches the ID you copied, the account is right. This takes a minute and stops you from banning, inviting, or whitelisting the wrong person.

Frequently asked questions #

Can I find a Steam ID from a display name only? #

Not directly. The search shows profiles that use the name, and you read the ID from the URL of the right one. Two accounts can share a name, so ask for a profile link when the result matters.

Is my username the same as my Steam ID? #

No. The display name can change, the account name is for signing in, and the SteamID is a permanent 17-digit number.

How do I get a Steam ID from a custom URL? #

Paste the text after /id/ into the SteamID Resolver. Developers can call the ResolveVanityURL method of the Steam Web API instead.

What if the profile I found is private? #

A private profile still has a normal URL, so you read the ID the same way. Open the profile and check the address bar.
